Four bases on the west coast
Santiago del Teide has a tourist coast and a group of villages above it. The coast runs from the marina at Los Gigantes through Puerto de Santiago to Playa de la Arena. Higher up lie the village of Santiago del Teide, Tamaimo and Arguayo. Anyone searching for Los Gigantes hotels is really choosing between these areas.
Pick the area by what you plan to do. Where the boats leave from and which beach you want to walk to matter more than the view from the room. This guide has no booking links and lists no hotel prices, because rates change by date and by property. It is an independent site, not a hotel portal, a tourist office or a municipal page.

The areas compared
What each one offers, from the tourism pages of the island.
| Area | Setting | Beach | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Gigantes | The marina and the foot of the cliffs | Playa de los Guíos, black sand below the cliffs, near the marina | Boat trips and whale watching, which start from the marina; cliff views |
| Puerto de Santiago | A fishing harbor with a seafront promenade | A town beach of black sand, 50 m long and 20 m wide, at the fishing harbor, with showers, cleaning, bins and restaurants | A seafront base with a local harbor |
| Playa de la Arena | An urban beach in Puerto Santiago | Black sand, about 140 m by 40 m, with toilets, showers, a lifeguard post, sunbed and umbrella hire and access for people with disabilities | Beach days with services on the sand |
| Hill villages | Santiago del Teide, Tamaimo and Arguayo | None, the coast is down the hill | Walks, Chinyero, the bus point for the Masca gorge and the pottery museum in Arguayo |
Equipment and opening times can change from season to season, so ask your accommodation about the services you need. No area is "the best" or "the cheapest" in this guide. That depends on your dates and your plans.
Tours from Los Gigantes
Boat trips, whale and dolphin watching, Masca and Teide excursions from Los Gigantes, with live prices and availability.
How to choose
Match the base to your trip.
Boats and cliffs
The marina at Los Gigantes is the starting point of the whale watching boats and the other boat trips. A stay here keeps the morning departures close. Read more on boat trips and on Los Gigantes.
Beach and seafront
Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena suit a stay built around the beach and the promenade. The beach descriptions are on the pages for Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena. The municipality confirmed the Q de Calidad quality mark for La Arena and Los Guíos in July 2025. That is a different award from the Blue Flag.
Walks and villages
The hill villages are the base for land routes: PR-TF 65 runs from the main village through Tamaimo to Puerto de Santiago, and the Chinyero trails start near the TF-38. The municipal tourism site names the Casa del Patio in the main village as a rural hotel in use today. Check availability and rates directly. Trail details are on the hiking page.
Without a car
Line 477 runs through Puerto Santiago to Los Gigantes, and line 473 is shown at the La Arena stop. For Masca the bus is compulsory for the gorge and is not part of its ticket, see getting there.
Holiday rentals and the law
Many visitors look at apartments rather than hotels. In the Canary Islands, law 6/2025 of 10 December 2025 regulates the tourist use of homes. It was published in the official gazette on 12 December 2025 and is in force, not a draft. A declaración responsable is required from the Cabildo before the activity starts, together with an entry in the Canary tourism register.
This does not mean that every holiday apartment is banned or automatically legal. The law contains planning limits and transitional rules, and the often repeated "maximum 10 percent of all homes on Tenerife" does not reflect its full text. As a guest, ask the host for the registration number of the rental and keep the booking confirmation.

Tourism debate and costs
Context, stated plainly.
In 2025 protests under the slogan "Canarias tiene un límite" took place on the islands, including a demonstration on 18 May 2025. Protest groups called for an eco tax, a moratorium and measures against housing problems. Those are demands, not current law. The fees at Masca and on the Teide are path charges, not a tax on staying. Your booking confirmation lists any fee of your accommodation. If you are also weighing another island, the Fuerteventura stay guide compares areas in the same way.
Where to stay in Santiago del Teide: questions
Is it better to stay in Los Gigantes or Puerto de Santiago?
It depends on the plan. Los Gigantes has the marina and the boats, while Puerto de Santiago has the fishing harbor, the promenade and a town beach. They are neighbors on the same coast, linked by line 477.
Which areas have a beach?
Los Gigantes has Playa de los Guíos, also called the Los Gigantes beach. Puerto de Santiago has a 50 m town beach, and La Arena has a larger black sand beach. They are three separate beaches in the official descriptions.
Are there hotels in the hill villages?
The municipal tourism site names the Casa del Patio, a rural hotel in the main village of Santiago del Teide. Offers are mostly on the coast. Ask directly about rates and availability.
Can I rent a holiday apartment legally?
Tourist use of homes is regulated by law 6/2025. A registered activity needs a declaración responsable and an entry in the tourism register. Ask the host for the registration number.
What is the Q de Calidad on La Arena and Los Guíos?
The municipality confirmed the Q de Calidad Turística for both beaches on 3 July 2025. It is a tourism quality mark and not the Blue Flag.
